I can't help it.「しょうがない」 世の中にはどうにもならないこと多々あります。何とかしてあげたいのは、やまやまなんだけどでも無
理なんだ...。 そんな時はこの言葉。
IRA（Irish Republican A
rmy）のテロリストの一味が英黒人兵を誘拐。でも見張り役の ファーガス（スティーブ
ン・レイ）は黒人兵（フォレスト・ウィテカー）と妙に気が合い殺すに忍びなくなる。黒人兵との約束どおり彼の恋人に
会いにいったファーガスは、彼女と恋に落ちた。けれど...うーん。話は意外な展開に。

You can say that. なら「そのとおりです」と言い切れますが
could に含まれる「仮定的用法が」はっきりした返事を不明瞭
にさせています。You could say that の後に if ...がある
と考えればいいと思います。
A: (Is) She your wife?
B: Suppose you could say that.
A:「妻かい？」
B:「同じ事さ」

┗━┗ で使われます。人質に顔を見られているだけでもヤバイ
のに本名まで教えたファーガス。とても正気とは思えま
せん。
> run a mile from「嫌な人を避けようとする」
そいつを見れば run a mile「すぐに逃げ出す」のもうなずけ
るディルに付きまとう嫌な男。それなのに付きあってるディル
の気持ちがわかりません。
A: So who's he?
B: He's what she should run a mile from.
A: Then why doesn't she?
B: Who knows the secrets of the human heart.
A:「あれは誰だ」
B:「もっとも悪質なやつさ」
A:「不可解だ」
B:「それが人の心ってもんさ」
> In a manner of speaking.「いわば」
A: You killed my Jody.
B: In a manner of speaking.
A:「ジョディを殺したのね」
B:「殺したようなもんだ」
真実を告げるのはつらい。でも答えは一つ。言いにくいこと
も in a manner of speaking を加えれば、「和らぎ」ます。
たとえ、言いたいことが同じでも。

「しようがない 性（さが）だから」
ジョディの語る「さそり」の話とこのセリフの意味
するところがこの映画のテーマ。あまり多くは語れ
ませんがユニークなストーリー展開には−！驚!−
Scorpion wants to cross a river, but he
can't swim. Goes to the frog, who can,
and asks for a ride. Frog says, "If I
give you a ride on my back, you'll go and
sting me." Scorpion replies, "It would
not be in my interest to sting you since
as I'll be on your back we both would
drown." Frog thinks about this logic for
a while and accepts the deal. Takes the
scorpion on his back. Braves the waters.
Halfway over feels a burning spear in his
side and realizes the scorpion has stung
him after all. And as they both sink
beneath the waves the frog cries out,
"Why did you sting me, Mr. Scorpion, for
now we both will drown?" Scorpion
replies, "I can't help it, it's in my
nature."
